Dad’s video lasted seven minutes.
He described the missing transfers.
Julian’s lies.
The warnings he ignored.
And the chances Dad had given him to stop.
Then his voice softened.
“Elena never asked me for money. She asked me to let the truth come out lawfully.”
I swallowed hard.
Dad continued.
“I am leaving the house to her because she made it a home during my illness.”
Julian stared at the screen.
“Everything else remaining in my estate will be used to establish legal aid for elderly people who have been financially exploited by relatives.”
Julian shoved forward.
“You poisoned him against me!”
I looked at my brother.
“No. You did that yourself.”
Dad’s video continued.
He explained that he had discovered unusual withdrawals months earlier.
At first, he refused to believe Julian was responsible.
He asked the bank to review the records privately.
Then he found payments linked to Julian’s businesses.
He confronted him.
Julian denied everything.
Dad gave him another chance.
Then another.
Each time, more money disappeared.
Eventually, Dad asked me for help.
Not because I was his favorite.
Because I was the one person he believed would follow the evidence instead of the emotion.
I had spent months preserving statements, emails, account records, property documents, and copies of Dad’s communications with Julian.
The safe was never intended to protect cash.
It was intended to protect proof.
Then sirens sounded outside.
Julian looked toward the window.
Two detectives entered the study moments later.
Samuel had contacted them according to Dad’s instructions.
The plan had been simple.
If Julian remained calm, the evidence would be handled through the estate process.
If he tried to flee, destroy evidence, or attack me, law enforcement would already be close enough to intervene.
Julian had managed to make that decision easy.
One detective approached him regarding the assault at the funeral.
The other began asking questions connected to suspected financial exploitation, forgery, identity misuse, and the movement of Dad’s money.
At the doorway, Julian looked toward our relatives.
No one moved.
Uncle Raymond lowered his eyes.
Aunt Celia handed me a clean towel.
Serena began crying when one investigator explained that certain accounts connected to the disputed funds had been frozen pending investigation.
Julian twisted around.
“Elena, tell them this is a misunderstanding.”
I stepped closer.
“For ten years, whenever you needed money, Dad rescued you.”
Julian stared at me.
“Whenever you humiliated me, Dad asked me to be patient because you were family.”
I shook my head.
“You mistook mercy for permission.”
“I’ll pay it back.”
“With what?”
His mouth closed.
Samuel opened the final folder.
Inside were court filings and orders connected to freezing assets linked to the missing funds while ownership could be determined.
The investigation had traced Dad’s money into a condominium, two sports cars, cryptocurrency accounts, and a failed restaurant venture.
Assets purchased with misappropriated estate money could potentially be recovered.
Julian stared at the documents as though they were another coffin.
“You planned this,” he whispered.
“No.”
I looked toward Dad’s frozen image on the computer screen.
“Dad planned for the truth to survive him.”
Then I looked back at Julian.
“I simply made sure it did.”
