My World Changed in an Instant….

Instead of the security guards Chloe expected, Vanguard Horizon’s head of executive security stepped into the lobby.

Two senior security officers stood beside him.

The manager’s face had lost its usual corporate confidence. He looked like a man who had just received an order from someone far above his authority.

He passed Chloe without acknowledging her and stopped directly in front of me.

Then he lowered his head respectfully.

“Ms. Sterling,” he said, unable to hide the panic in his voice. “We were just informed of your arrival. Please accept our deepest apologies for the delay.”

He gestured toward the private elevator.

“The express car has been secured for you. Your brother, Mr. Victor Sterling, requested that we escort you directly to the penthouse ballroom.”

Chloe’s mouth fell open.

Her pearl earrings shook against her collarbone as she turned toward him.

“What did you call her?”

She pointed at me.

“This woman is Vivienne Vance. She is the executive vice president’s wife, and she doesn’t even have an invitation.”

The security manager gave Chloe a cold look.

“Her legal name is Vivienne Sterling.”

The color disappeared from Chloe’s face.

“And if you threaten Ms. Sterling or her daughter again,” he continued, “you will be removed from this building immediately.”

I did not give Chloe another glance.

I lifted Sophia into my arms and stepped into the private elevator.

She rested her head against my shoulder, still holding the necklace she had made for her father.

The doors closed, shutting Chloe out of sight.

The elevator climbed toward the ninety-fifth floor in complete silence.

When the doors opened again, we stepped directly into Vanguard Horizon’s penthouse ballroom.

The room was a monument to wealth.

Tall glass walls overlooked the rain-covered Manhattan skyline.

Hundreds of investors, executives, politicians, and wealthy guests stood beneath enormous chandeliers, sipping champagne while a live orchestra played softly.

In the center of the room stood Dominic.

He wore a custom-tailored black tuxedo with diamond cufflinks.

A younger woman in an emerald-green silk gown clung to his arm.

Beside them sat Dominic’s parents, several city officials, and a nine-year-old boy in a miniature tuxedo that matched Dominic’s.

Dominic raised his glass.

“To the new matriarch of Vanguard’s future,” he announced proudly.

The guests around him applauded.

I stepped out of the elevator carrying Sophia.

As I walked down the center aisle, a heavy silence began spreading through the ballroom.

It started near the entrance and moved forward like a wave.

Executives lowered their glasses.

Investors turned to stare at the woman in the wet, inexpensive coat walking through their private celebration with a little girl in her arms.

Dominic finally turned to see what had caused the disturbance.

The moment his eyes met mine, his confident smile vanished.

His champagne glass tilted in his hand, spilling across his fingers.

“Vivienne?”

His voice carried across the silent ballroom.

“What are you doing here? Who allowed you onto this floor?”

The woman beside him studied me with open disgust.

“Dominic, who is this woman?” she asked. “Is she the unstable former partner you warned my father about?”

Dominic’s mother pushed herself out of her chair.

“Vivienne, leave immediately!” she demanded. “You are ruining the most important night of my son’s career. Have you no decency?”

I stopped ten feet from the table.

Sophia’s small hands were still wrapped around the paper necklace.

I gently took it from her and placed her on her feet beside me.

Then I walked forward and laid the handmade necklace in the center of Dominic’s untouched caviar plate.

“Sophia made this for you to celebrate your promotion,” I said.

My voice echoed clearly through the ballroom.

“But it appears you’ve already filled your table.”

Dominic looked around at the staring guests and raised his hands defensively.

“Vivienne, you have completely lost control of yourself.”

He moved closer and lowered his voice.

“Go home. We will discuss the divorce privately.”

His expression hardened.

“If you create a scene tonight, I will make sure you receive nothing. I’m the executive vice president of this company. My future father-in-law sits on the board of Sterling Capital.”

He glanced dismissively at my coat.

“You are a public school teacher. You cannot defeat me.”

I gave a quiet laugh.

“Your future father-in-law sits on the board of Sterling Capital?”

“Yes,” Dominic said, regaining some of his arrogance. “He controls the private funding that keeps this company alive. One word from him, and your life will be dismantled.”

I looked toward the ballroom entrance.

“Then I suggest you look behind you.”

The heavy oak doors opened.
